MY REVIEW:
My heart broke for Jesse and everything he endured, I am so happy that he found McKay Taggart because he needed people to depend on and be on his side.
“We find our families, Jesse. Some of us are lucky to find them when we’re born, but a lot of us have to look. So be grateful and welcome every single person who becomes family to you. Hold them close and yes, mourn them when they’re gone, so at the end of all of this you know you had a life.”
When we met Jesse in On Her Master’s Secret Service, he was so lonely and desperate for attention. He had no one in the world and that made me feel so sad for him.
All he’s ever wanted was to do good in the world and some how that was messed up.
“But I believe some people are simply born good, selfless. They’re the universe’s way of making sure there are always heroes among us.”
Phoebe had us all tricked, when reading about her in the other books I really thought she was super soft and didn’t have a backbone at all, boy was I wrong. Phoebe is a total boss.
She’s encountered her fair share of heart break and wont let that happen again. Even if she’s half in love with Jesse. She won’t risk losing someone else she loves.
Both her and Jesse are so broken that they don’t believe they deserve love. This one was a real tear jerker.
Phoebe can’t find a way to open her heart to Jesse no matter how hard she tries.
Phoebe has cut herself off from the world and feelings even her own. She won’t acknowledge that she has any feelings for Jesse.
“But it occurred to her that she’d been stopping far too often. She’d been screaming a safe word at the universe for years, and she wasn’t safer or happier for it. She was just lonely and afraid.”
And Jesse has been torn down to the point where you would think he would be as sweet and kind as he is. He cares about everyone around him. Especially Phoebe, even though he seems to be getting nowhere with her
This is the true essence of who Jesse is, he cant turn it off. He’s been knocked down time and time again. And somehow he’s still standing.
“No. You don’t understand. You thought her love could save you, but I’m going to tell you a secret I’ve discovered. Your love is the only love that can save you. Your love is powerful and worthy and more important than being loved in return. You already saved yourself. You do it every day when you wake up and make the decision to be a partner and a friend and yes, you saved yourself when you decided to love her. Don’t take that lightly and don’t regret it. It’s never, ever a mistake to love someone.”
But Jesse won’t give up on her no matter how much she pushes him away. He finally realizes what she really needs from him. She also needs a bit of sweet dominance. And he aims to give it to her at all costs.
“The key, he’d discovered, was simply overwhelming her with what she needed so desperately—love and affection. And no small amount of dominance.”
Jesse and Phoebe have a chemistry that is off the charts, and Jesse does his best to show her passion and love.
Phoebe starts to realize that maybe there can be more to life than this aching emptiness that she feels. But she’s so scared to give up the comfort of the lonely aching emptiness, why should she be allowed happiness?
“Don’t think about it. Just do it. There are no guarantees in life except that if you waste it, you’ll regret it. Take it all—the good, the bad, the risky.”
When Phoebe finally decided to open herself up to the possibility of what could be between them and possible give them a chance, it’s beautiful.
“I think what I’ve figured out is that we don’t have a limited amount of love. It doesn’t get all used up and then there’s nothing left. We choose. We choose who we love and how we love, and there is nothing between two consenting adults that brings them connection and pleasure and joy that’s wrong.”
Jesse wants so bad to do right in the world and show everyone he’s a good guy and not whatever they thought he was. And he realizes all he can do it try. Everyday try to do the right thing.
This book takes us to middle east to find out what really happened to Jesse all those years ago and it unravels something more.
Which of course makes me want the next book!

WOULD I RECOMMEND:
I would absolutely recommend this book. I loved finally getting Jesse’s story he’s been in the background of a few of the books. And we got tidbits of his story but never really knew what happened to him.
Here we get to see it all and it only makes me love Jesse so much more. And Phoebe, I really liked the boss chick she was so much more than the original Phoebe we saw in the beginning.
These two together healing each others pain and hurts was everything I needed and didn’t know.
This book will make you laugh, cry, hurt for the character and so much more. And learning about the other characters. Perfect!
